Frequently Asked Questions
If I still haven't answered your question, shoot me a message! There are no stupid questions.
How do I know I can trust you?
I understand what an investment this is. I don't have assistants for editing, and I write each offer/proposal personally. My education, experience, and training have prepared me well for the hard work, but building trust takes time. I am open to any questions you have, I’m happy to provide up to 1,000-word samples, and if you aren’t satisfied once we are working together, you may cancel our contract at any time. Depending on the project, how far in the process we are, and the reasons why we are cancelling our contract, I can offer partial or full refunds.
Why is my rate different than my friend’s?
Each book is unique, and each writer is gifted differently. The strengths and weaknesses of one book may be completely different from another, and each one requires different skills and time demands of the editor. A sample is given to the editor in advance to gauge how much time will be needed, or how intense the editing will be. For instance, someone who speaks English as a second language may have a higher rate for copy editing because there are more grammatical or punctuation errors. Rates also differ based on deadline, number of services, and specialty knowledge required.
Why is editing so expensive?
What you pay for is what you get. There will be many editors with lower rates than me, but doing a good job takes time and expertise, and compensation is expected for that!
Hiring a professional editor is an investment. My skills in the industries and genres are based on experience, training, and education. You may find cheaper editors elsewhere, but you risk missing specialized input into (1) what readers want and need, (2) what publishing companies are looking for, and (3) what sells.
I work hard to be as affordable as possible! If my rates are scary, let's talk about it. I can offer lower rates and/or discounts for longer deadlines sometimes, I run different discounts throughout the year, and I’m receptive to payment plans and reasonable negotiation. If budget is the primary issue with us working together, please let me know and we can see if we can find a rate that meets my experience and business needs while also meeting your budget abilities.

Why do I have to schedule phone calls?
Phone calls are a helpful way to connect as the writer-editor team. I prefer to expect them so I can prepare, refresh on any information, and make sure I’m in a quiet environment. I don’t accept impromptu or unexpected phone calls for the most part because I am not able to offer my full attention at times.
In order to focus for extended periods of time on editing, it is important to keep a healthy distance from my phone at times. I work at coffee shops a lot! And libraries, of course! I am also a human who has doctor’s appointments, time with friends and family, vacations, and sleeping hours.
To schedule a phone or video call, please send me a message. I usually have availability within a few days of the inquiry.
